Paris Diamond League Meeting: Many contests among Africans


The Paris meeting counting for the eight stage of the Diamond League offers on Friday, July 8th, some number of contests among African champions, especially on 1500 m and 3000 m steeplechase in the men, and 800 m and 5000 m in the women.

The 1500 m will witness the participation, among others, of the three African athletes who competed in 2011 in less than 3'32 " namely, the Moroccan Amine Laalou (3'31" 92), the Kenyan Asbel Kiprop (3'31 " 76) and Ethiopian, Mekonnen Gebremedhin (3'31 "90). On the 3000 m steeplechase, the competition will be even more fearsome with a group made of Kenyans Ezekiel Kemboi (8'8 "34) and Patrick Langat (8'08" 59), the "Ethiopian Roba Gari (8'19" 41) and Ugandan Benjamin Kiplagat of (8'12 "87). In the women's 800m, one will be watching the performances of the Moroccan, Halima Hachlaf (1'58 "27), the South African, Caster Semenya (1'58" 81) and Kenyan, Janet Jepkosgei (1'59 "05 ). However, the fireworks of the evening could be triggered by the 5,000 women event, which will witness the confrontation between Kenyan Mercy Cherono (14'37 "01) and an armada of Ethiopians among whom Meseret Defar (14'37 "32), Meselech Melkamu (14'39" 44), Setayehu Ejigu (14'32 "87) and Gensebe Dibaba (14'37" 56). Finally, a positive surprise could come from the men's long jump with three African athletes among the best of 2001: Ghanaian Ignisious Gaisah (8, 26 m), the Moroccan Yahya Berrabah (8, 25 m) and South African Godfreu Mokoena (8, 19 m).
