The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) University of Lagos chapter have declared a one week total strike to protest the non payment of their hazard allowance.
Speaking at the rally organized by the duo, SSANU Chairman Comrade Odusanwo Olusegun said that the unions have declared the one week strike to press home their demand as the institution has failed to pay the hazard allowance which the Federal Government in 2009 directed all universities to pay to their staff.
According to Odusanwo, other institutions such as Obafemi Awolowo University, Lagos State University and University of Benin have since started paying. He argued that there is no cogent reasons why UNILAG will not honour the directive of the Federal Government.
Odusanwo noted that the unions anger came to fore when they discovered that the institution, authority started paying responsibilities allowance to the Vice Chancellor, Bursar and other top management Staff of the school, claiming lack of fund to pay other Staff. “If they have not payed anybody we would not have gone to strike since they claim there is no sufficient fund” he said.
Also speaking, Comrade Ganiyu Adelagun Adeshina, NASU Chairman reiterated that the strike will be total as the unions have sometime ago embarked on warning strike to press home their demand which yielded to result. “But this strike that commences today will be total” he said. He however called on all staff to immediately stop working and parents should call back their children as they are going to disturb academic activities on campus.
The two union leaders have accused the Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Prof Adetokunbo Sofolue of partiality in his dealing with the staff arguing that they all suffer the same hazard.
Efforts to speak to the Vice Chancellor, Prof Adetokunbo Sofolue proofed abortive as we were told that the Vice Chancellor is in Vice Chancellors’ meeting at Abuja.
