Falcons can be better if league is strong – Akande

Following the poor outing of the Super Falcons in the on-going Women World Cup in Germany, former Falcons coach and technical adviser of Crown FC Niyi Akande says the team can be re-invigorated if the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF can focus on the female league in the country. “If you want to rate Falcons I will not say they have done badly, because in the past they did bad especially in 1991.

Like I said, in 1991 they were beaten 10-0 in China when Ismaila Mabo took over from me. This is the same Falcons that German team struggled to beat by 1-0, which means they have improved and they will still improve. Let’s give them a chance. With time and patience, I think they will do better.

Talking on foundation, I laid a good foundation, Eucharia Uche who is now chief coach of the team was one of my girls in 1991, so when you talk of foundation, I have made a perfect foundation for women football in this country. May be we lack the players that can give us results. I think we have abundance of girls in this country, people go out and look for talents that can make Falcons do better.

Uche alone cannot do the job. They can appoint male coaches to scout for girls but not coaches who will go after girls to do otherwise. Male coaches who are fathers and not coaches who are hooligans.” Akande said

On the way forward for the team, Akande said: “Let us forget sentiment or tribalism, let us do the right thing at the right time. I agreed with (Adokie) Amiesimaka that our female league needs to be solidified in order for us to have better players that will help the team. We have abundant talents that can make Nigeria proud . But if we go by tribalism, then we will not get the best. We need people who are honest, coaches who are honest and who are ready to work for the country not coaches who will be looking for the contrary,” he concluded.
